Dr. Wendy V. Norman, MD, MHSc, CCFP, FCFP, DTM&H, is a family physician-researcher in sexual health and family planning care and a Professor in the Department of Family Practice, with Associate member appointments in the School of Population and Public Health and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She holds Canada’s first Chair in Family Planning Public Health Research from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2014-24). Professor Norman is the interim Executive Director of the Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity at UBC, and an Honorary Associate Professor in the Faculty of Public Health and Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in the UK.

Norman’s program of research is the foundation for the BC Government’s pledge to provide free prescription contraception for all (a national first), for the federal regulatory changes to bring contraceptive sub-dermal implants to Canada and to remove restrictions on the medical abortion pill so that Canada is globally unique in allowing it to be a normal prescription vastly improving access to abortion through primary care. Norman’s work similarly has led to more than a dozen federal and provincial health policy and health system or service improvements, including supporting FDA decisions in the US, and providing invited evidence briefs to federal government policy decisions in the UK, and Australia. Norman and has contributed to 7 clinical practice guidelines and has been cited in “Up To Date”. In 2015 Dr. Norman was awarded the prestigious international Guttmacher Darroch Award for advancing reproductive health policy research, in 2020 with the inaugural National Mentorship Award of the Society of Obstetricians & Gynecologists of Canada, and in 2021 recognized as a Woman of Impact in Canada by the Ministry of Women and Gender Equality. She founded and leads the Canadian national collaboration: The Contraception and Abortion Research Team (www.cart-grac.ca), and is a technical advisor to the World Health Organization on Sexual Health Survey Data.
